Plan your goals
In Business we use the Deming circle to see if we realize our goals: plan-do-act-check… So we plan a goal, we start realizing it and then we act when its ready. After a while we evaluate (check) and if necessary we can adjust anything we want.
What do we use in daily life to reach our goals? My last post was about prioritizing and one of my readers reminded my kindly not to forget the planning and organizing..
Yes, we’re not all in The Secret: although I believe our thoughts have a great influence on our actions, I still believe the action is necessary to realize our goals. So it’s time for planning!
You can only plan when your goals are smart. I already gave you the instrument of the vision board and the seven topics for your goals. Each topic has to be smart: ‘more money’ is not specific enough, so you have to make it ‘I increase my income with x% this year’ or you just put an amount which you want to earn.
When you have your goals, you can plan the actions. What should you do to earn more money? Increase your prices, search for more clients, find other products to sell, ask your boss for a raise…? Don’t start thinking ‘he won’t..’ or ‘I can’t ‘ please, just brainstorm ideas and then choose the best ones.
After the actions you need to find the time to carry out these activities. I use a quarterly planning (to be honest I hardly planned anything in my life, because I realized at school that I had already finished my project in the time the other students were still making beautiful schedules… But lately I do plan.. ).
I wrote a book. Yes yes, I wrote a book. It was one of my dreams for years!! But I always told myself I could not write a bestseller (what I obviously wanted). But then I followed this course ‘how to write a book in 28 days..’ and there I understood I could easily write a book about my work. It is not only that am I very experienced, I also work in a niche market. So it is interesting how I work. I had a goal, I made it specific: I wanted to make a method and describe how I realize my projects in order to make an outline for colleges. When you write a book you are an expert (is what other people think!)
Then followed my planning. I wanted to finish the writing in one year and publishing in half a year. So I planned days for writing, interviews, research.. and I planned the activities for the publishing: from final editing, to publishing, printing and promoting…
And I put them into my quarterly planning. It worked… Not always, but when I was behind my schedule, I knew I had to work harder the next month.. so it really helped to stay on track. And you know, I still don’t like making schedules and checklists, but I love to put the markers when I have finished something! I work in Xmind (free mindmap software). These markers are made in bright green… I love it!
Do you have a planning, do you have time to spend on your goals? If not.. how will your dreams come true?? Believe me, it works. Even if your make a rough planning. So do me (and yourself) a favor and make one. Thanks!
